AVONDALE WOMEN'S CLUB.
A meeting of the Avonilale Women's Club was held in< the Blockhouse Bay Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Miss E. Newton presided. The day being Empire Day, the president suggested that members should in future make an endeavour to confine their purchases to Empire goods whenever possible. Miss Newton also drew attention to the constitution of the Women's Forum, requesting members to join and so help to strengthen the influence of women in public affairs. Mrs. Shalcross Battersby, a visitor from Calcutta, India, brought greetings from Miss Jean Begg, and gave an interesting address on "Life in India." Dealing mainly with events from a meinsahib's point of view, Mrs. Battersby gave intimate glimpses of social and domestic life, and also a picture of travel in the East and the activities during the season in the various hill stations. As regards social service, the speaker intimated that progress had been very slow during the past 18 months owing to the politic.il unrest and the activities of Gandhi and the congress. However, some progress had been made, for the juvenile offenders, and a weekly play centre had proved beneficial and popular to young boys of the beggar class. As an appropriate conclusion Mrs. P. Wright sang two Eastern songs, which were much appreciated. The serving of tea under the supervision of Mrs. March brought the meeting to its usual happy close.
