DAVIS CUP.

Battle Between Australia and America. CLEMENGER IS OPTIMISTIC. PHILADELPHIA, May 24. The draw to determine the order of play in the first day's Davis Cup matches on Friday, Australia versus the United States, will be held on Thursday at noon. The question whether Allison or Shields shall represent the United States in one of the singles was undecided yesterday after Shields had defeated Allison three sets to one in a test match. Vines is the other United States singles representative. After watching the Australian stars, Crawford and Hopman, in practice matches, Mr. Bcrnon Prentice, chairman of the United States Davis Cup Committee, predicted that the visitors will give the American players a stirring battle. He advanced the opinion that Crawford has the effortless style of Henri Cochet and is one of the world's greatest tennis players. The Australian captain, Clemenger, says he is optimistic over the team's chances.
