VICTORIA LEAGUE.

1 A BRILLIANT BALL. In commemoration of Empire Day, a , ball, which proved a most successful ; and brilliant function, was held by the ; Victoria League in the Scots Hall last evening. With powder and patches, the scene presented was a most entrancing , one and from the balcony and platform the sight of the graceful frocks, savouring of the Old World and the powdered heads of the men who wore coloured lapels, was a never-to-be-forgotten one. , A feature of the ball was the dancing i of the minuet by. a number of young < people. Though simply decorated, the i hall made an effective setting for the ' groups. Deep rose and pink roses were . suspended in festoons along the walls', while the lights were shaded wilit pink and rose trailing streamers. The stage was arranged as a lounge, with huge clumps of bamboo and other green foliage and masses of greenery lined the entrance, and were to be seen in each 1 corner of the room. The side rooms had also been transformed into lounges with shaded lights and comfortable chairs. The decorations committee included Mes-1 dames Somers, E. H. B. Milsom, A. S. Sinel, Allen, Donald Ogilvie and W. J. Napier. Misses C. and F. Murray were hard-working secretaries. Miss Daphne Knight had trained the sets. Mesdames J. B. Macfarlane, L. S. Rickerby, Partridge, Hyde and Heather formed the supper committee. Downstairs in the supper room the decorative scheme was gold and black, autumn flowers being used artistically. Their Excellencies, the GovernorGeneral and Lady Blcdisloe, attended tho ball, and on their arrival were received by the president of the league, Miss Mowbray, and members of the committee. Accompanying their Excellencies were Mrs. G. Veal, Ma jor R. W. Russell, Lieutenant J. C. Elwortliy, R.N., A.D.C., and Captain J. W. Tweedie, A.D.C. Her Excellency wore a frock of palest green chenille georgette, with wrap of green brocaded in gold, finished with deep collar of brown fur. Miss Mowbray was in silver and black lame, with skirt of chenille. Mrs. G. Veal wore parchment satin trimmed with diamante. Tho debutantes were: Miss Jay Brown (Morrinsville), who wore deep cream satin, trimmed with silver lace, and Miss Mary Hanan (Morrinsville), ivory taffeta, with liand-painted embroideries. In Mrs. L. S. Rickerby V set were: Mrs. E. Webb, Misses Mary Cruicksliank, Kay Spriggs, Nell Gray, Alice Wilson, Kathleen Gilbert, Edna Lincoln and Tilly Rountree. They wore frocks of cyclamen taffeta and black lace, the lace scalloped at the bottom of the full skirts, at the neck and on the waistline. Black lace mittens were worn and they carried black lace fans. Their partners were: Messrs. Alex. Higgie, Campbell, Patterson, Cyril Shepherd, Bill Ifammond, Phil Manning, Harkness and Von Sturmer. Taking part in Mrs. Ernest Williams' set were: Misses Vieve Williams, Bcrnice Ogilvie, Joyce Herdman, Dina Isaacs, Judy Aickin, Dorothy Sliera, Marie Colson and Beechie Hardie Neil. Their frocks were of apricot taffeta, with parma violet velvet and. posies. Large panniers and fichus gave a distinctive effect and they carried fans to match. Also in the set were: Messrs. Allan Smalley, Denis Nathan, Jock Murdock, Bill Lowe, Jack Ashcroft, Douglas Sliesth, Tim Wright, Stanley Spence In Mrs. Cerutty's set were: Misses Marjorie Cerutty, Eileen Adkins, Fay Reynolds, Mavis O'Neill, Jean McCormick. Mavis McCulloch, Babs Souter and Olga Jackson, who wore frocks of palest green taffeta made with long pointed bodices and three cascade frills on the skirt. Pink roses added a dainty touch and tliey carried pale pink fans. Their partners were: Messrs. Jack White, Don Dunn, Ivor O'Neill, Frank Simmonds. Frank Bowling, Howard Newcombe, W Miller and Jack Cook. Mrs. Gulliver's set comprised: Misses Moira Gulliver, Clarice Pragnell, Beryl Christian, Ellie Swanson, Dorothy and Majorie Cardy, Gaye Henderson and Phyllis Renner, and their frocks were of rose pink taffeta, with front panel of lace trimmed with turquoise, blue bows. They carried rose pink fans and wore mittens. Messrs. M. Jack, Manning, G. Keenan, B. Angvvin, T. Cornwall, J. Cooper, D. Sloman and L. MacKechnie were also in tho set. In Mrs. H. D. J. Mahon's set were: Misses Alice Bailey, Pat Masefield, June Frater, Beta Saunders, Ngairie Adams, Marjorie Low, Hilary Biss and Lois Mahon. Their frocks were of turquoise blue taffeta, trimmed with palest pink, fashioned with full skirts, in which were bands of tulle trimmed with pink and blue flowers. Blue mittens were worn, and they carded blue fans. Also in the set were: Messrs. G. Fisher, B. Seabrook, B. Milne, E. Henton, K. Wilson, E. Harrop, H. Gould and B. Beaverstock. The set arranged by Miss Jean Ilorsley comprised: Misses Mary Wilson, Margaret Gunson, Annette George, Joan Evven, Jean Carnegie Brown, Barbara Steadman, Hilda Walkley and Jean Horslcy, whose frocks were of ciel blue taffeta, made with three frills at the bottom of the full skirts, and square Victorian necks, trimmed with ruching. Their mittens were to match, and they carried heirloom feather fans. Their partners were: Messrs. T. Hudson, B. Thomson, T. Ferguson, T. Gunson, N. Mains, G. Frater, I. McArthur ajid P. Horrocks.

Others present were: Mrs. G. W. Hutchison who wore a frock of black georgette and lace; Lady Sinclair-Lockhart, black beaded georgette; Lady Herdman, deep wine velvet, with coatee to match; Lady Gunson, black georgette, with diamante trimmings and blue velvet wrap; Lady Richardson, draped black lace; Mrs. C. Heather, royal blue georgette; Mrs. H. D. J. Malion, black and rose floral chiffon; Mrs. Ernest Williams, black and white floral chiffon; Mrs. H. Gulliver, black velvet; Mrs. W. H. Boyle, palest pink, with cream lace; Mrs. H. If. Partridge, sedge green velvet; Mrs. C. Kissling, black velvet, with variegated shawl; Mrs. Cerutty, primrose lace; Mrs. L. S. Rickerby, black beaded georgette; Mrs. J. Carpenter, black draped georgette and velvet; Mrs. S. A. Stride, petunia embossed chenille and georgette; Mrs. W. P. Viekery, deep cream lace; Mrs. Allen, leaf green georgette; Mrs. Edgar, black velvet; Mrs. Donald Ogilvie, black lace; Mrs. R. Isaacs, black velvet; Mrs. F. Wilson, black, with black velvet; Mrs. P.
