OUTLOOK AT HIKURANGI.
WORK OF PUMPING STAFF. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.]! WHANGAREI, this day! It was stated in Hikurangi this morning that there was no immediate prospect of a settlement of the strike. Tlie Hikurangi Coal Company is now trying to ascertain if the pumping staff is prepared to continue under certain conditions. At a meeting of the stall concerned it was decided to refler the matter to the union executive. The delegates are expected to return to-day from Auckland, when their instructions from the conference will be placed before a general meeting of the union. In reply to the message dispatched yesterday by the Hikurangi business men, the Minister of Mines, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, has telegraphed as follows: "In answer to your telegram of yesterday I understand that the men decided to down tools until the notices of dismissal of the men discharged are withdrawn. This is a matter which is doubtless determined by special circumstances which have not been eonveyed to me. I consider that the men should resume work and if this is done I will be pleased to make strong representations to the company to confer with the men."
