NEW SCHOOL AGE.

PUPILS OF FIVE YEARS. REPORTED ENROLMENTS. Although the permissive school entrance age is now six years, it is reported that pupils of five years of were enrolled in more than one school in the Auckland education district yesterday. These enrolments, according to the relevant section of the Finance Act, are illegal. The reason for their being made appears to be a contention that headmasters are guided by the Education Act and the regulations under it, and that to date they have received no instructions and no advice that there has been any alteration in the Act or its regulations. Against this, of course, is the statement of the Minister of Education that 110 announcement from him is necessary, because the provisions of the section have become law.
