FIRE IN SWANSON STREET.
OFFICE BUILDING DAMAGED. ONE ROOM COMPLETELY GUTTED. Two rooms and the hallway of offices in a building adjoining the Cosmopolitan Chambers, Swanson Street, were considerably damaged by fire about 1.30 this morning. The rooms damaged aie the premises of the Firth Pumice Company. One room was completely guttted and the contents were destroyed. The other room was extensively damaged, but not gutted. A large room on the opposite side of the passage 01* liall, occupied by Mr. P. S. Manning, a dealere in fancy goods and antiques, suffered slight damage, and an expensive rug, which was displayed in an alcove outside the room, and had just been sold, was practically destroyed. Several fine cushions suffered a similar fate. Both walls of the hall were charred, the ceiling of the hall was charred and blistered, and the ceiling of the gutted room was completely burnt. The building is the property of the trustees of the Foley Estate, and was once the meeting place of the New Zealand Tattersall's Club, evidence of this being the initials marked with brass tacks on the stairs.
The insurance on the building is £2500, with the Now Zealand company. Tlio estimated damage is £500 or £600. The damage done to the contents of the offices of the Firth Pumice Company was not ascertainable.
