ARAPUNI REMEDY.
"BEYOND AXiXj EXPECTATIONS" NOW NO LEAKS IN SPILLWAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The remedial measures carried out by tho Public Works Department in connection with the power station at Arapuni have turned out successfully •' beyond all expectations," according to a statement which was made by the Minister of Public Works, the Rt. Hon. J. ti. Coatos, this afternoon. The Minister said that as the result of the vibration which developed recently in No. 1 turbine it was not working at present, pending further investigation. Tho main objects of the work, which cost about £500,000, were to seal cracks which threatened tho security of the foundations, to waterproof the head race and provide a draining system underneath, to reinforce the ground around the penstock intake structure, to impose a waterproof layer 011 the rock below tho spillway, to stop certain leaks in tho foundations at the main dam, and to strengthen the country adjacent to tho dam. Mr. Coates said that as a result of theee corrective steps the trouble, which had necessitated the report of Professor Hornoil had disappeared. Leakages in the main dam had been reduced by 8.") or 00 per cent, and, to all intents and purposes, tho ground was thoroughly dry. There were no leaks in the spillway. He described the completed work as a splendid job.
