CHANGE IN PLANS.

AMERICAN SHIPPING SERVICE J MARIPOSA'S EAST yOYAGE. Now being built in America, the Oceanic Steamship Company's 19,000 ton liner Lurlice will not be placed in the America-New Zealand-Australia- service, £ as originally intended. A statement to „ this effect was made yesterday, depres- j sion in trade and a failing off in the a nur-ber of trans-Pacific passengers being s given as the reasons for the change in a the company's plans. It is intended, j however, that the Lurline will visit j Auckland next year. e When the Oceanic Company launched j out on an ambitious building programme r _ it was announced that three 19,000-ton c liners, the Mariposa, which passed c through. Auckland yesterday, the Mont terey and the Lurline would replace the c Sonoma, Sierra and Ventura. The Lur- i line will be the last of the three to be launched. 1 Like the Mariposa, the Lurline will < commence her career with a long Pacific < cruise, starting on January 27. She will . visit the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Australia and the Orient, her programme being almost identically the same as that recently carried out by the Mariposa. On her return to San Francisco she will be commissioned in the Honolulu service. The new liners have a fine turn of speed, as was illustrated by the Mariposa (Captain W. R. Meyer) on her voyage from Los Angeles to Auckland. The trip was made in 15 days, as compared with the 20 days taken by the company'.? older vessels. From Los Angeles to Honolulu the ship averaged 21 knots and from Honolulu. to Pago Pago 20 i knots. The run to Suva was made at an average speed of 19.1 knots, and that to Auckland from Suva at 19 knots. It is expected that the vessel's average .speed on her run to Sydney will , also be 19 knots.
