The truth of this statement will be clear to the owners of the lines—the general public-when they consider the all important function of the railways in the development of the primary and secondary industries —farming, timber-milling, mining, manufacturing. Railway transport facilitated the economic distribution of the population in rural and urban areas. New Zealand's social and economic structure rests mainly on the railway foundation.
