About ten days ago the Salvation Army Men's Home at Epsom launched a scheme to assist the needy, and especially those who have been hard hit by unemployment. It was intended to distribute several hundred "good will" bags, made by men in the home, throughout Auckland city and suburbs, and to ask those who received them to fill them with old clothes, boots, underwear and anything else that would be of use. An official of the home said this morning that the response had been poor, only 10 or 12 bags having been distributed. It was not intended to discontinue the scheme, and officials would, in the near future, canvass the hotels, boardinghouses and flats. The reason for the poor response, in his opinion, was that the public had already given so much towards unemployment benefits, etc., that they were now somewhat slower in giving.
