SOCIAL GATHERINGS

The Warkworth branch of the W..C.T.U. held their "Peace Day" meeting at the Methodist Church on Monday, when the Rev. Geo. Yule gave an interesting address on the work accomplished by the League of Nations in the interests of world peace. Mrs. F. Thompson also spoke.

The first monthly meeting of the newly formed Drury branch of the women's division of the Farmers' Union was held on Thursday last. The president, Mrs. Rankin, gave a short address. It was decided to hold meetings in the Presbyterian Church Hall. Afternoon tea was provided by the committee, the hostesses for Ijlie afternoon being Meedames Cattanach, Draper, Theyers and Heard.

An enjoyable time was spent by the members and friends of the Wharepai and Haeremai Oddfellows Lodges, of Kumeu, on Saturday evening at a dance given in the Kumeu Hall. The winners of a Monte Carlo waltz were Miss Nancy Parnell and Mr. R. Macklow, and the spot waltz, Miss Ina Harrison and Mr. L. Mclntosh. During the evening it was announced that a benefit dance for Bro. E. Costar, who had loet a leg in a recent motor accident, would be held in June. • * # *

Mrs. Vargas gave a delightful tea party at her home in Earl's Court for Miss Marie Moffatt, the young Maori who is in London studying music. Mrs. Vargas, wearing grey crepe de chine, introduced her guest to the New Zealanders and Australians present, who included Mrs. David Low, mother of the cartoonist, and Mrs. David Low, jun., Miss Flanagan, Mrs. and Mias Shirley Darbyshire, Mrs. and Miss Gertrude Johnson, Mrs. Percy Crisp and her daughter, Miss Anne Clarkson, who is taking up window-dressing as a calling, Mrs. Hugh Bailey, Mrs. Filmer Barber, Miss Nelle Scanlan, Miss King and Miss Williams.

Miss Edna Sanders, of Laurie Avenue, Parnell, entertained a number of young people last evening at bridge, the prize winner being Miss Catherine Wright. Beautiful flowers were used in the lounge and morning room, the supper table decorations were pink roses and violets. Miss Sanders wore a pastel green French voile; Mrs. Sandere, black crepe de soie. Among those present were: Misses Margaret and G. Wright, Stella Stewart, Una G. Heron, Edna and Molly Lincoln, Louise Harris, Pat Stone, Molly Goodwin and Gwen Leton.

On Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. W. Moore entertained a of guests at their residence at Taupiri for the coming of age of their son George. Dancing, cards and games were enjoyed and musical items were given by Messrs. Waring, Wattere and McTear, and recitations by Mr. J. Mulligan. The health of the guest of honour wae proposed by Mr. W. Waring, Mr. Fowler replying on behalf of Mr. G. Moore. Mrs. Moore received her guests wearing blue satin beaute. Among those present were: — Mesdamee C. Fowler (Auckland), R. Horwood, L. Powell, W. Waring, L. Wilson, W. A. Powell, N. Jackways, F. Wilson; Mieses D. Jackwaye, N. Wilson, H. Rennie, E. Gerrand, K. Powell, V. Tapper, B. Tattey (Auckland), 0. McFiirlane (Ngaruawahia), D. Gleeson, V. Wilson, M. Anderson, B. Stevens, D. Hurt, A. Waring, R. Charles, L. Morris, G. Powell, K. Jackways, V. Burt, V. Brumby, Z. Charles.

Miss Jessie Reid presided over a wellattended meeting of the Mount Eden College Old Girls held in the Y.W.C.A. last evening for the purpose of making arrangements for an At Home in honour of their past principals', the Misses Bews. Keen interest was shown in the proposal and it was decided to hold the function in the Lyceum Club early next month. Tho following committee to undertake all arrangements was set up: Meedames Warren, Henderson and McCosh Clark, Misees M. Geddee, E. McGowan, I. Devore, I. Cook, Hilda Wiseman and Vera Ziman. Miss G. Erson was appointed secretary. Plans were also discussed for a school commemoration.

The annual meeting of the dramatic circle of the Lyceum Club was held on Monday evening, when there was a good attendance of members. Miss Janet Murray presided. It was decided to hold three open evenings during %he year and the proposal to hold readings of plays among the members of the circle was unanimously carried. Two new members, Misses Caughey and B. Wilson, were welcomed to the circle. Mrs. W. H. Pavkee, who is at present on a visit to England, wae re-elected convener, and members of the committee elected were Mrs. E. Verran, Misses J. and E. Craig. Mrs. Winks was re-elected secretary.

The annual meeting of the St. John's Methodist Women's Guild was held in the schoolroom yesterday afternoon, when the Rev. Geo. Frost presided. The secretary reported that for the eighth consecutive year there were no outstanding subscriptions. The treasurer reported the amount of £31 6/8 having gone through the general fund, and £29 0/0 through the reserve fund. In addition to this £30 8/ had been paid on Gift Sunday, December 13, for trust purposes, as a gift from guild members. The reports from other committees were also satisfactory. The officers elected were as follows: —President, Mrs. Geo. Frost; secretary, Miss Cora Veale; treasurer, Mrs. W. A. Cooke; assistant treasurer, Mrs. Stoodley; vice-presidents, Mrs. S. L. Hirst, een., Meedames Buckley, Purnell, Pierce, Neill, Smith and J. W. Reed; orphanage committee, Mesdames Buckley, Hirst, Braithwaitc, Jackson, Stoodley, and Hutchins, and Miss Bouskill; afternoon tea committee, Mesdamee Jackson, W. Hardley, Russell, Harrowell and Misees Tichner and Hawkens; visiting committee, Mesdames Braithwaitc, G. Smith, Stoodley and Miss Tichner; delegate to National Council, Mrs. Wade; reporter, Mrs. Geo. Smith. The house committee to look after the parsonage is to coneist of Mrs. S. L. Hirst, and Miss Tichner, with Mrs. Geo. Frost ex officio.
