GIFTS TO UNEMPLOYED.
AVOIDING OVERLAPPING.
CENTRAL COMMITTEE'S ATTITUDE
A. "drive" for clothes and gifts for the unsmployed w,uch is being organised by Mr i> M. Pvae, head of ,the Auckland Training College, has not been approved by tho Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee.
Mr 'T. McXab (Mayor of Mount Eden) said at a meeting of the committee yesterday that the "drive" was set down for July 11, and that house to house collections were proposed in the Mount Eden and Epsom districts. It was proposed, lie understood, to give tho clothes and benefits to the 50 odd No. 5 scheme men who were working at the Training College grounds. Mr. McNab said he had spoken to Mr. Rae on the telephone and pointed out that it was the wish of the committee that all clothes and gifts should be distributed through the central depot so that overlapping would be avoided. "I asked Mr. Rae whether he would do that and he decided to defy the committee," said Mr. McNab. "It has come to the notice of the committee that local appeals for clothes and gifts are. being made without reference to the Metropolitan Committee," said the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison. "We would like to urge householders to give only to tho Metropolitan Committee. Then there will bo no overlapping and people who are not entitled to gifts will not get them." Mr. W. F. Stilwell (Mayor of Mount Albeit) said there were about seven guild* of women working in Mount Albert making various things, but all these gifts would be sent to the central depot. It was 7iientionecl that four dozen pairs of sox and 14 pairs of boots had been supplied to the depot by the City Mission.
