G. Sullivan, M.P., narrated to the Christchurch City Council the steps he had taken in connection with the establishment of an auxiliary police The discussion arose out of a motion moved by Mr. Baker, a councillor, thanking the temporary police for their services. It was not carried, but was referred to the finance committee, eo that a resolution acceptable to every councillor could be framed. . . The Mayor said, in his own opinion, the motion was a consequence of letters which had appeared m certain newspapers. One of the objects of those letters was to discredit linn. After discussion the Mayor asked Mr. Baker to amend the resolution, by referring it to the finance committee. Mr. Baker took some time to consider the Mavor's proposal. "If you are going to play the party game and try to score off the Labour party, then go ahead said the Mayor, "but if you want the council to do something to soften down class feeling and lead to a greater feelin"- of unity, then adopt my suggestion. After further discussion the Mayor s suggestion was accepted by Mr. Baker.
