COPEY IN FORM.

PROSPECTS AT ELLERSLIE

RACING AT WANGANUI.

(Special to "Star.")

WANGANUI, Monday

Of the 'chasers seen out at Wanganui (Jopey gave tne uest display, and iooks tne most iiKely to win one ox tne big crosscountry events to come, me Marcue Arch geiding is owned and trained by Air. J xuyer, ot liawera, and lias done a lot of jumping over ienees. lie oui-eiassea tne oilier runners 011 Waturuay, ana never put a loot, wrong, lie nas omy laden uvvice iu 111s experience in races or seuoolmg, and in omy one instance was it Gluougli his own mistake. His owner expects Oopey to go very near winning the Great .Northern.

Alter Airtigttt and Jen had lost their riders at the first fence in the Wanganui Steeplechase they continued to race witli the others for over a circuit, and more than once looked likely to cause a serious accident. As it was, one of them almost ran lvowhatu off a fence, and lost him considerable ground. However, lie could have had no possible chance with the winner, but the Quarantine gelding went well enough to suggest that lie will be j hard to beat in some of the minor crosscountry events to come. j Chief Link was on the rails in the run, home in the Farewell on Saturday, and could not get through, otherwise the son of Chief Ruler—Silver Link would have given Kaihoro a tough race. He will be worth watching ill races to come. Arisus had not been shaping well on the tracks prior to the Wanganui meeting, bleeding and making a noise. He appears to be badly touched in the wind, and it may bo the best has been seen of the Thespian gelding. Pomp was running second turning into the straight in the Farewell Handicap, but he then faded out of it. The son of Absurd has heaps of pace, but does not show of his best when the acid test is applied. . Conjurer 11. did not run up to his first day's form in the May Hurdles on Saturday. Even though he had 121b extra on his back his display was disappointing. He will show to better advantage later on. Fernden won the hurdles on Saturday in good style. Ho jumped well all the way, and finished on generously when tackled by Balloon. It is only a matter of the Redfern gelding keeping sound to win again shortly. Just An Idea did not start in the May Hurdles, owing to having knocked a knee in the Grandstand Steeplechase on Thursday. The injury is not serious, and the Chief Ruler gelding will probably be all right in a few days. But it is doubtful whether he will be taken to Ellerslie.

Kowhatu gave a much-improved display in the Wanganui Steeplechase, leading for nearly two miles and jumping in his usual proficient style. He was not forward enough to see out the distance, but be shaped well enough to make his prospects of winning a race over country shortly look bright. He will make his next appearance in the Hawkc's Bay Steeples.
