MANUKAU RELIEF WORK.

203 MEN EMPLOYED,

NEW CAMP OPENS TO-MORROW.

It was reported by the engineer of the Manukau County, Mr. J. R. Page, at the meeting of the council this morning, that the operations under No. 5 scheme had proceeded generally as during previous periods. Eor the month ended on May 14 an average number of 203 men had been employed in the six ridings, as follow: —Mangere, 35 men; Papakura, 61; Papatoetoe, 80; Turanga, 13; Wiri Drainage Board, 13; county office, one.

The work carried on had been chiefly in the nature of "public works." In one district some of tlie men were being employed in farm improvement operations. At Kawakawa Bay, beyond Clevedon, an additional special party of 20 men from the city would be established in camp to-morrow. These men would carry on road formation work giving access to private lands. All application for a further party of six men to work at Orere was being dealt with. The recent amendments to No. 5 scheme had so far been applicable only to the metropolitan area; and so far as the county was concerned, it would only take in those men registered at Onehunga and working at Mangere. The engineer stated that it was unsatisfactory and troublesome to have some of the county's parties governed by the new scheme and some by the old. It was hoped that this would be rectified.
