COMPLETE DERATING.

FARMERS' UNION MOVEMENT.

COMMENT ON RATE REBATE.

The fact that on the agenda paper at the last conference there were IT remits from branches calling for complete clcrating of farm lands for roading purposes" and the substitution of an increased petrol tax was mentioned by Mr. A. A. Ross in his presidential address at the opening of the Auckland larmers Union conference this morning. The president said that the only response had been a grant to local bodies sufficient to make a rebate of 2/G in the £ on all rates. It was a move iji the right direction, but totally inadequate,"and could not be accepted as a genuine attempt towards complete derating. Now there was a very definite move" to raid petrol taxation for the benefit of the Consolidated Fund, and it was plain that the process had only to become well established to lendei derating a remote possibility. He did not see; at the moment how it could be successfully countered.
