BRITAIN DEFENDED.
FRENCH OFFICIAL REBUFFED.
LONDON, April 2S
"Since when has self-help ceased to be worthier of admiration than of blame?" asked Sir Henry Bcttcrton, Minister of Labour, in defending Britain's industrial policy in reply to remarks in the annual report of the International Labour Office by the secretary, M. Albert Thomas.
Referring to Britain's adoption of protection, says the Geneva correspondent of "The Times," M. Thomas declared that Britain was thereby setting out to solve her own industrial problems, implying that the International Labour organisation inevitably will lose its interest for Britain, as the raising of labour conditions in competing countries would not possess its former value. Sir Henry vigorously declared that Britain's action had been forced .oy foreign tariffs and was only Ringing into line with the other g T ™*™%ltb<> nations. Britain was world's leaders in regard*oi . fl „,„„> Nation and no eUn . from a world-wide raisin dard of living.
