BUY BRITISH GOODS
QUESTIONS IN COMMONS
(Received 12.30 p.m.)
LONDON, April 20.
In the House of Commons, Mr. E. Mander (Nat.-Lib., Wolverhampton) asked whether other countries were carrying on propaganda similar to the "Buy British Campaign" and if Britain proposed to recommend the abandonment of all such campaigns in the interest of the export trade.
Major Colville, Overseas Trade Department, said that several European countries were conducting movements in the interest of their home products. The "Buy British Campaign" was organised by the Empire Marketing Board and had been completely successful. He saw no reason to abandon it.
Mr. Mander: Won't you try to break up this international suicide club?
Major Colville: We shall continue to ask our people to buy goods from Empire peoples who are willing to buy largely from us.
PASSED BY LORDS.
BOARD OF TRADE BILL.
(British Official Wireless.)
LONDON, April 20,
The House of Lords met specially to-day to pass the President of the Board of Trade Bill through all its stages, enabling Mr. Walter Runciman to take his place again in the House of Commons. Afterwards, a Royal Commission sat and signified the Eoyal assent to the Act.
The measure repeals an Act of Queen Anne's reign whose provisions, only just noticed, precluded most of the recent Presidents of the Board of Trade from holding office.
FRENCH WOOL EXPORTS.
NEW RUSH INTO BRITAIN.
LONDON", April 20.
French woollen manufacturers are preparing to ship large quantities of textiles to England, where, in spite of the exchange, they can undersell Yorkshire manufacturers owing to the lower French labour costs.
