Tine weather was again experienced for the club's'ls-mile handicap held on Saturday from 2STew Lynn to Swanson and return, only one shower falling just as the riders finished. A strong head wind_ on the trip out to Swanson militated _ against fast times being recorded. A novice race for all riders who had not won a road race previously was run in conjunction with the handicap. There was a record entry of 26 starters in both events. The harriers v. cyclists contest, an event eagerly looked forward to by all, is to be held on May 28 at Avondale. The cyclists this year hope to atone for last year's defeat, when harriers filled the first four places. A good contest is expected, as- the harriers are sure to make a strong bid to retain the honours. A 20-mile handicap will be decided next Saturday at Te Atatu over the large circuit, starting and finishing by the main road, and twice round. Riders are reminded that the entries for the Auckland Centre's 23%-mile open handicap must be handed in with the entry fee by next Saturday. . Strathdee (7.10) won the novices race on Saturdav comfortably in 47.20 riding time, after 'sharing fourth place with W. Brear the previous Saturday. These were his only starts with this club and he has performed very well. He is a strong rider and a valuable addition to the club. # W. Brear (8.45) was the second novice home. He has been shaping very well indeed for his first road season, having registered one sixth, one fourth and one second in his three starts. His time was 48.23. , ~ j. K Yates (7.45), another newcomer to the road, was third novice. _ This was his first start and he showed himself to be a good rider, with great promise as he gains experience. . , G Patrick (5.10) followed up his second place of the previous Saturday _by securing fastest time in 44.36. He W a strong rider and will prove to be a serious opponent even for the older and more experienced competitors. C. Johnson (5.10) secured second fastest for the novices in 44.41. He is a first-class roadman and has scored points in all three road races in which he has started. S. Stocken (7.10) scored his first place this season by winning the handicap event on Saturday in 47.41. He is beginning to show some of his last seasons form, when he secured erne first, one second and two thirds and one third fastest time.; W. Crocker (6.45) finished second, doing the distance in 48.39. Although riding strongly, he does not yet seem to have struck his form of last season, when he won the 50-mile race. When he, does so he is going to prove a very hard man to beat. • , K. Moshiem (6.45) rode to third place in 48.40. He rode a good race and was only beaten for second place in the sprint. He also seems to be slow in reaching top form, but with training he should be able to account for several races this season. H. Browne (scr) again secured the time honours, in spite of being forced to stop during the race owing to his toe strap becoming unfastened and jamming the pedal. His time was 44.1. Browne is certainly living up to his reputation of being a fast and determined rider. I. -Laloli (scr) was second fastest in 44.2. He is proving himself to be a very strong rider and one of the best wheelmen in Auckland. He and Browne will make a very strong team for representation of the club in open competition.
