SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A sunshine ball in aid of the funds of the Community Sunshine Association will be held early in May. English folk dancing will be one of the attractive items.

A meeting of the Ponsonby branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in St. John's Hall on Thursday afternoon. Miss Read presided, and gave a comprehensive report of the recent Dominion convention, held in Wanganui. Miss A. McLog, Dominion organiser, spoke. A resolution was passed urging the Prime Minister to reconsider the proposal to impose a tax of 1/ in the pound npon women. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Frost.

The annual meeting of St. Stephen's Ladies' Guild, Opotiki, was held on Thursday afternoon. The vicar, Rev. N. F. Benham, presided. The balance-sheet showed over £51 3/8 added to the church funds during the year._ Mrs. W. Anderson was re-elected president, and Mrs. Burton secretary. Plans for the year's activities were dealt with and it was decided to hold a Paddy's Market at an early date.

A happy time was spent in the Kingsford Hall, Otahuhu, last Saturday evening, when an old time dance was attended by a large gathering. Two competition dances were held, the first Monte Carlo waltz being won by Mr. D. Cochrane and Miss E. McAnulty, while the winners of the second one were Mr. A. Sherry and Mrs. E. Jones. During the evening pleasing extras were played by Miss J. Webber.

On Friday last the B members of the Mount Albert Croquet Club welcomed players from the Heleneville Croquet Club. The lawns were in excellent playing order and many close games were played. The results were:—Singles, Helensville 67 points, Mount Albert 64 points; doubles, Helensville 175 points, Mount Albert 203 points. Luncheon and afternoon tea was provided for the visitors. Among those present were: Mesdames Ellett, Quarrie, Wilson, Dorset, Walters, Rennie, Robinson, Sheffield, Hunt, Goad, Dwerryhouse, all of Helensville; Mesdames Smith, McKay, James, Townlev, Hughes, Beck, Hawke, Lowe, McCowan, Windsor, Maxwell, Forsyth, Robertson, Dawson, Woodward, Thomas, Angus, Miss Lambe. Mrs. Lllett, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the Mount Albert players.

The Women's Progress Club met on Wednesday afternoon at the Higher Thought Temple, Wellington Street. A talk was given by Mr. Gould, dietitian. The lecturer urged his listeners to live more simply. A discussion followed. The Temple Quartet gave musical items and tea was served.

The United Croquet Club was well attended on Wednesday afternoon when the president, Mrs. W. Powley, was presented with a crystal flower bowl and a bouquet. For afternoon tea the pavilion and tables were profusely decorated with flowers and maidenhair ferns. Mrs. Oswald, in presenting the bouquet, referred to the splendid work done for the club by the president, and to the appreciation by members of her efforts. The flower bowl was presented on behalf of members by Mrs. Wilding, hon. secretary. Mrs. E. Morton emphasised the great work the president had accomplished and the affection i;i which elie was held by all the members. During the afternoon progressive croquet was played, prizes being won bjr Miss Bowmar, Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Gall.

The Returned Sisters' Association held their Anzac reunion and thtir annual meeting at the Lyceum Club 011 Saturday afternoon. Altogether fifty - three members were present, and the afternoon passed very happily in renewing old acquaintances and calling up memories of the war years. The hostesses for the afternoon were Miss Bagloy, Miss Early, Miss Cherry, Miss Hood and Miss Martyn. During the afternoon Miss Mary Early was elected president and Miss Martyn re-elected secretary for the coming year.

- A social evening and (lance was held in Daly's Hall on Friday• evening, in aid of the Western Area Women's Association an dtlio Council of Women's fund. Card tables were arranged for those preferring to play, and the liall was attractively decorated for the occasion. Mrs. J. C. Blomfleld was organiser, ably assisted by members of the committee. Competitions and a programme of music alternated with the dances, those assisting being Mesdames Melville, Edmonds, Spiers, and the Misses Daly, G. Barton, Wrigley, Taylor (2), Johnston (2) and Mr. Trevor Blomfleld.

The opening dance of a new girls' club connected with St. Peter's Anglican Church at Takapuna was held on Friday evening in the Parish Hall. Members of a similar boys' club were the guests of honour. The objects of the club are both educational and of a social nature, its motto being "Faith, Hope and Charity in Service." Lectures on various subjects will be given during the coming winter, and plays will be produced at intervals. Music was provided by Miss Sunday Mowbray, and supper was served by the committee. Those present included Mrs. R. H. Trill, the president, and the Misses IT. Trill, Barbara Trill, Gardiner, Marie Bomford, Marcia Heighway, Maxine Heigliway, Dorothy Spriggs, Louise Williamson, R. Cumming, G. Foote, Betty Kensington, R. Foote.

A party was given in Milne and Choice's reception room on Friday evening, when a number of ladies connected with the Amateur Operatic Society assembled to bid farewell to Miss Thoro Adames, who is leaving by the Aorangi for Halifax. The table was beautifully arranged with pink cactus dahlias, and during the evening Mies Ince presented the guest of honour with an evening bag of black moire, with the guest'o monogram inset in brilliants. After tea a picture party was held with supper at the Civic theatre following. Miss Adames wore a hunter's green silk crepe fleuri, with small' felt hat to tone. Among those present were: Misses Edna Ganmon, Doreen D'Authreau, Lilian Impey, Kate Inee, K. Christie, Nellie Ganmon and Peggy Cutting.
