WOTEGD NOT STRIKE.
MANUKAU RELIEF WORKERS. "It is gratifying to know tliat all therelief workers' in the comity appeared on their jobs on the day when the strike was to eventuate,'' said the chairman of the Manukau County Council, -Mr. F. W. Waters. Mr. Waters said that the men showed a good spirit. The council agreed that all unemployed relief workers in the county who were ratepayers should be given a chance of working additional days at relief wages in order to settle their rate accounts. This suggestion was put forward by several workers who were finding it difficult to meet their rate accounts and were anxious to avoid the usual proceedings for recovery.
"A FIjW AGITATORS."
TROUBLE ON MOUNT EDEN JOBS. "I think I should mention that we have had a little trouble with some of the workers under No. 5 scheme," 'said the Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, after the ordinar v business had been disposed of at last* night's meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council. "Ninety-five per cent of the men are loyal, but there are a few agitators. "I had quite a bit of trouble this morning at the pound with a few agitators, but after a little persuasion I got them to go away. Two or three who were the worst this morning were at work this afternoon. Pickets tell the men on one job that there are no men working at all, which is not true. 1 think we should protect the relief workers by going round and having a talk with them."
BAPTIST RESOLUTION.
The Baptist Social Service Association carried last nisht the following resolution, moved by Dr. J. J. North and seconded by Mr. C. W. Boswellt "That it is essential that .the problem of unemployment should be approached in a different spirit "from that which now obtains. We believe that sufficient sustenance should be provided to secure at least the minimum necessary for decent family life, and that the community should recognise that the unemployed are victims of economic conditions which they did not create. We believe that the difference between niggardly treatment such as fosters despair, and euch treatment as preserves can be met out of the resources of this nation, and that it is a sacred duty incumbent on us to meet it."-
