SOME OUTSTANDINGLY GOOD WORK
WORD-BUILDING COMPETITION PROVES SUCCESSFUL. JOKES WANTED FOR NEXT WEEK. Dear Girls and Boys,— Entries were heavy for the word-building competition conducted in the Budget a fortnight ago and the standard of work was exceptionally high. Rule-breaker entries were few and the general neatness of the work was worthy of comment. One competitor submitted a list of more than 500 words, but when the judges went through his entry they disallowed 125 words because they could not be found in the standard English dictionary used for. correcting this competition. Kathleen Byrnes' original list contained 428 words, of which only 20 had to be pencilled out, and so this girl was awarded the first place. With 402 words correct, Marie Birch received the second award. There was close running, too, for the third and fourth places. Doris Malone had 400 correct and Elma Sutton 380. It is said that cheerfulness is the greatest tonic in the world, and genuine laughter is certainly the sweetest music. How about raising a laugh by thinking of all the good jokes CF} i*-l? you know, selecting the best and sending m'OJii it in order to try for one of the cash fllr fjtM prizes offered in the joke competition, VjT QAJf which is announced elsewhere on this »/^^*=^^ page.
