W.C.T.U.
The monthly meeting of the Remucra branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs. Hugh Kasper, the president for the Auckland district, was in the chair. Miss A. McLay, Dominion organiser, spoke on the necessity existing for each and every woman playing her part in the social service of our country. The steps recently taken by women's organisations throughout the country in the direction of protesting against what is deemed to be unjust legislation were, described at length by Mrs. Fred Daldy. "Mr. McCombs, M.P., has ascertained that £750,000 is the sum estimated to bo raised by the women's unemployment tax," Mrs. Daldy pointed out. "Of this amount, the Government apparently intends to expend some £10,000 in women's unemployment relief. The New Zealand members of the W.C.T.U., numbering about 9000, are voicing in no uncertain manner their belief that the 'cut' in old ago pensions, as well as the proposed imposition of a tax of 1/ in the pound upon the incomes of women, is nothing less than- a gross injustice, and wo are determinedly urging upon the Prime Minister the necessity for reconsidering legislation now before the House in these respects." Mrs. Robinson, the vice-president of the Remucra branch, was elected delegate to the National Council of Women. Sister Grace and Mrs. Hugh Kasper were appointed street collectors for Poppy Day. A programme of music and song was provided by Mrs. Percy Winstone, Mrs. Lewis Eady and Mrs. Fred Daldy.
