SLIDING SCALE TAXATION.
The proposed shilling tax on wages is about the last straw. The unfortunates who receive under £2 a week are looking forward in fear and trembling to this last, brilliant cyclone of the cranium, inflicted on us by the powers. It is outrageous and cruel. Families must live, and taxing a man with a family in receipt of less than £2 a week is going back to the dark ages. Let me suggest an alternative, all being exempt from taxation who receive less than the following: Single men and women in receipt of £2 10/ weekly, 1/ in the £; single men and women in receipt of £1 10/ weekly, 6d in the £; Single men and women in receipt of £1, 3d in the £; married men (no children), £2 10/ weekly, 3d in the £; married men (with family), £2 10/, exempt; married men (with family), £3 10/, 3d; married men (with family), £4, Gd; married men (with family), £5, 1/. For every additional weekly £5 or portion as follows: Thus £5 weekly, 5/ (5 per cent); £7 10/, 11/3 (7i per cent); £10, 20/ (10 per cent); £12 10/, £1 11/3 (12J per cent); £15, £2 5/ (15 per cent); £20, £4 (20 per cent). I maintain that this scheme would go far to satisfy the worker—and it would not inflict the hardship that taxing the man who is down and out does. R. W. ROBSON.
