TRADE WITH CANADA.
CANADIAN NATIONAL LINE NEW SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED. In the expectation that trade between New Zealand and Canada will improve as soon as the trade treaty between the two Dominions is ratified, Canadian National Steamships, Ltd., announce that when the St. Lawrence River opens for navigation for steamers after the winter the New Zealand service will ply direct between here and Montreal, omitting Australian ports. At present steamers load at Halifax, the St. Lawrence being icebound, and discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, sometimes Bluff, and then go to Australia, returning thence to New York, Boston and Halifax. Any cargo from New Zealand has therefore to go via Australia. According to the new itinerary, which will commence with the Canadian Leader, leaving Montreal on May 17, steamers will make Dunedin their first port of discharge in New Zealand. From Dunedin they will work up the coast, discharging and loading, to Auckland, and sail finally from here for New York, Boston and Montreal. After the Canadian Leader, steamers are scheduled to leave Montreal for Dunedin on June 22, July 20, August 24 and September 21.
