MISSING SUIT LENGTHS.
TWO SUSPECTS CHARGED. SMARTLY -DRES SEB MEN. HEAVY BAIL FIXED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. According to an account given by Mr. Alex. Fraser, an audacious case of shoplifting occurred in his tailor shop in Rathbone Street yesterday afternoon.
, Mr. Fraser stated that lie was away at lunch, leaving a girl attendant in charge, when two well-dressed men, both of medium build, called. One asked the girl to sew a rigger button 011 his coat. While she was doing this ill the workroom two suit lengths of worsted disappeared. The discovery of the theft ivas made bv Mr. Fraser 011 his return.
Lat ;r, a man called for a collar, said to have been left by one of the two who had called previously. He was arrested as a suspect by the police. Two smartly-dressed men, arrested last evening, appeared in the Police Court this morning on a charge of stealing cloth to the value of £0, the property of Alexander Fraser.
They were William Body, aged 42, and Basil Fleming, aged 34, and were described as travelling showmen. Detective Sergeant Robertson asked for a remand for a week, stating that four or five other lots of property were alleged to have been stolen, and inquiries would have to be made before the police could proceed.
The magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., granted a remand.
Counsel asked for bail, and Mr. Robertson requested the magistrate to fix a substantial sum. The accused, he •said, were travelling showmen with 110 (ixed place of abode, and there was i;o reason why they should not leave for Australia. They had been about Whangarei sir.ee Easter and had been attending various shows in the district. The two accused had 110 intention of leaving the district, said counsel, in asking that it be made a condition that they report to the police daily. "Bails must be substantial,"' said the magistrate, fixing a sum of £100 each with one surety of £100.
