TRAGIC BLUNDER.
POISON FOR MEDICINE. HOSPITAL PATIENT'S DEATH. BELLADONA IN MISTAKE. Administration of belladona in mistake for syrup of figs by a young hospital nurse was found by a coroner's jury to have caused the death of a patient, Mrs. Beatrice Summers, in Livingstone Hospital, Dartford. The coroner said that he hesitated to say anything to hinder the work of the hospital, but he could not shut his eyes to the fact that the evidence showed great want of organisation and supervision. He did not want to say anything to hurt the feelings of the young nurse, but he felt she was hardly old enough to have the administration of medicines.
j.ne medicine cupboard was a matter that should have had attention. The shape and size of the bottles should not have been similar. The mistake should not have been made, and the blame should not be on the shoulders of the nurse alone. The most astounding thing was that the sister did not know where the belladonna came from.
