"MARTYRS" OF BOXER REBELLION.
CANDIDATES FOR BEATIFICATION. The Congregation of Rites, which is the department of the government of the Holy See that considers applications for candidates for beatification, will set to work upon an unusual dossier when the autumn business begins. The cardinals who compose its working committee will be called upon to consider the lives and deaths of no fewer than 307 Chinese Catholics, all of whom were killed in the neighbourhood of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion. Chinese Christians claim that as many as 2055 of their brethren died martyrs' deaths for their faith at the time; but on examining the evidence put forward the Archbishop and bishops threw out all but 367 names. Several thousand witnesses have been examined in China, and their testimony sent to Rome. From it it is evident that no fewer than 25,000 Chinese Christians were killed because they refused to abjure their new faith. When the candidates have been finally selected their beatification will take place in the presence of the Pope at St. p eter's. A pilgrimage of Chinese Christians will travel to Rome for the purpose, and any members of the families to which the nco-martvrs belonged who have survived will be invited by the Pope and have seats of honour at the ceremony. <
