(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day. A man suspected of shoplifting startled the busy throng in Cuba Street shortly before 8 o'clock last night by jumping from a eliop verandah into the crowded thoroughfare.

and when the manager turned his back for a moment, ho made a desperate dasli for liberty by jumping out of a window on to the verandah, from which he leaped to the street and freedom. A large crowd immediately gathered at the scene and the police were called, hut the man, who was lucky not to any injury when he dropped to the street, could not be traced. It is believed his identity can be established.
