GIFT "COTTAGE" BURNED.

DUKE PAID ON £750 POLICY.

LONDON, March 24.

The miniature thatched cottage which the Welsh people presented to Princess Elizabeth, and which was destroyed by fire en route to London, was a gift to mark the Princess' sixth birthday. The furniture was in a separate conveyance, and was therefore saved. So pleased was the Duchess with the gift that she switched on the electric light, used the telephone, and said: "I could play in it for ever myself." The insurance company paid the Duke of York, as his daughter's guardian, on a £750 policy. A Cardiff unemployed official says that the suggestion of incendiarism is ridiculous. "The cottage could incense nobody; it cost nothing, and assisted in relieving distress." Princess Elizabeth's cottage was 22 feet long, eight feet wide, and 16 feet high, weighed 10 tons, and was equipped with hot and cold water and electric light. The fire was due to a spark from a steam tractor alighting on the thatch. It will certainly be rebuilt in readiness for the Princess , birthday. Most of the interior is little damaged.
