RAISED A STORM.
LL. GEORGE'S NEW BOOK
LONDON, March 24,
Referring to Mr. Lloyd George's book, "Reparations and War Debts," "The Times," in a leading article, recalls the "Hang the Kaiser" election in 1918. It says this was the most discreditable incident of Mr. Lloyd George's career. "To-day he ought to exclaim 'Peccavi' (I have sinned) instead , of 'J'aceuse' (I accuse)," says the journal "No man did more to confirm democracy's conviction that Germany could pay stupendous sums, and yet he- now brazenly asserts that he never really shared the extravagant reparations hopes. His practical reparations record will outlive his attempt to be wise after the event."
The "News-Chronicle" (Liberal) denies reports that France has banned Mr. Lloyd George's book because of the criticisms in it of M. Poincare.
Sir Walter Layton, editor of "The Economist," in a review of the book, says that Mr. Lloyd George does not dispose of the criticisms that he encouraged extravagant reparations hopes.
