HOUSE BURGLARIES.
BEDROOMS ENTERED. MONEY TAKEN FROM POCKETS. (By Telegrapn.—Own Correspondent.) HASTINGS, Friday. Eight houses in Hastings were entered on Wednesday night and £40 in cash and valuable articles of jewellery were stolen. The operations were evidently these of an experienced and clever chief. In one of his earliest attempts the thief was surprised at a home in Tcxmoana Road, and made his escape after a short chase by the occupant of the house. The burglar's activities were then centred on a block of houses towards the town end of Avenue Road West. The haul from this quarter included various sums of money totalling £25. Among the articles of jewellery taken was a watch valued at £10 10/. In St. Auibyn Street West two houses were visited. Additional sums ot money and a number of articles were stolen. In attempting to enter a third house the man was again surprised and another chase ensued, but once more he escaped. Some of the money and articles stolen were actually taken from beside sleeping occupants of houses. In one instance money was extracted from the pockets of clothing on a bedpost, and in another house money was taken from clothing lying across the foot of a bed. In another house the thief visited three bedrooms and stole money and other articles from each without disturbing the occupants.
