"WRECKING THE SYSTEM."

ARBITRATION LEGISILATION. TAKAPUNA COUNCIL HOSTILE. The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Bill was considered at last night's meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, said that the design of the bill was to wreck a system that had worked well for 40 years. If the bill became law, there would be a return to the old system of private bargaining, and the menace of industrial upheavals would be enormously increased. In reply to Mr. J. F. Colcgrove, who queried the wisdom of bringing a purely political question before the council, Mr. Guiniven said that every local body would be well advised to study the bill, as it had an important bearing on their activities. Also, it was only right that public opinion should be brought to bear while the bill was under consideration by Parliament. After a general discussion by members, the Mayor moved that the Prime Minister be informed that the council was of the opinion that no alteration to the existing Arbitration Act should be made. This was carried by six votes to two.
