SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

An impromptu picture party was given last evening to some of the wives and daughters of the medical delegates, and after the performance the guests returned to the Station Hotel to join a bridge party. Among those present were: Mrs. J. Williams, Mrs. J. Reid, Mrs. E. Vivian, Mrs. D. A. Bathgate, Misses Mary Bertram (Rotorua), Cathrine Young (Wellington), Judy Aickin, P. Hall, A. Thomas, D. Waddell, Elliot. A bridge party was given by Mrs. W. H. Nagle at her residence in Takapuna on Tuesday evening in the interests of the local croquet club. The best scores for bridge were handed in by Mrs. E. Elliott and Miss E. D'Esterre. Amongst the guests were: Mr. and Mrs. W. Lewins, Mr. and Mrs. Amodeo, Miss Todd, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. D'Esterre. * » * » Mrs. Clark Walker entertained a number of the delegates and wives of delegates to the conference of masseurs yesterday at the Lyceum Club. Wylie, Early, O'Callaghan, Misses J. N. Teape, Vickerman, Long, J. Read, Mary McLean, Hare, Radcliffe-Taylor, and Messrs. C. 0. Jorgensen and Petersen. # » * » A large delegation left Auckland on Tuesday evening to attend the Dominion conference of the W.C.T.U., which is being held at Wanganui. The following Auckland officers constitute the delegation: —Mrs. Hugh Kasper, president of the Auckland district executive; Miss Read, vice-president, representing the Ponsonby branch, Miss Catterfeldt, Epsom and Eden; Miss Fyfc, Mount Albert; Mrs. Hynes, Grey Lynn; Mrs. Eccersall, Otahuhu; Mrs. Benfell, superintendent of good citizenship; Miss Adams, superintendent of Maori work; Miss Appleby, superintendent of the Auckland Y branches; Mrs. Heard, representing the Auckland central branch; Mrs. Long,'representing Papatoetoe; and Mrs. Fred Daldy, representing the Remuera and Kohimarama branches.

A successful At Home was held by the Grafton Tennis Club at t!ie club courts, Grafton Eoad, on Tuesday, when the time was pleasantly passed with progressive tennis. Afternoon tea was arranged on the balcony of the bowling club's pavilion, > the tables looking attractive with zinnias and hellium. The guests were received by the secretary, Miss C. Stubbs, and members of the committee. The prizewinners were: — A grade, Mrs. Burd, Mrs. Smart; B grade, Mrs. Stafford and Miss T. Jones; consolation prizes, Misses G. Parr and Rudd. Among those present were:— Mesdames Stafford, Bowden, Tidmarsh, Maxwell, DAuthreau, Dillneur, Marreth, Burton, Wilson, Johnson, Stubbs, Miller, Wilson, Martin, Misses Darling, Arey, Mason, G. The first of a series of socials, to be held by the Tamaki Soccer Club, took place last evening in their new clubrooms, Vale Road, St. Helier's Bay. Those present were: Mesdames Williams, L. Lovatt, P. Speuce, C. Hoyte, Misses J. Austen, M. Davis, I. Carter, J. Wilson, B. Breton, N. Hoyte, G. Brown, M. Hoyte, M. White, M. Lovatt, D. Hoyte, M. Smith, J. Barrie.

Tho city branch of the League of Mothers held its first meeting of the year in the Airedale Street Mission Hall yesterday. Mrs. P. A. Lindsay, _ president, occupied the chair. Mrs. Lindsay spoke a few words of welcome to all members, old and new, and afterwards read the objects and rules of tho league. Mr. Scrimgcour gave an entertaining and helpful address to the mothers, urging them as a league and as individuals not to get into a groove, but to try to introduce fresh ideas and new life into the everyday things. Songs by Mrs. Arthur Walton were greatly enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served by the committee.

On Tuesday afternoon about 60 members of the Gardening Circle of the Lyceum Club met at Mrs. Harry Goldie's residence in St. George's Bay Road. Mrs. Goldie, who welcomed the members, wore a black and green figured crepe do chine frock, with hat to tone. The garden was a blaze of autumn flowers; massed zinnias, phlox, hydrangeas, delphiniums, and countless other flowers bordered the lawns. Quaint figures of gnomes and animals, bird baths and statues set amidst the green of native trees, added beauty to the scene. Mr. Goldie is wellknown as an exhibitor of dahlias, and a wonderful display was made by 1400 plants, massed together, and covered with gorgeous blooms of every shade. A Japanese garden, which was entered through a lacquered torii, created much interest. Quaint stone lanterns stood at intervals along a winding path, leading to a miniature lake, with water lilies m full bloom, and a lacquered arched bridge led to tho coolness of native bush. The "many rockeries were also a feature of interest, and the countless varieties of rock plants attracted much attention. m. » » •

Old girls of St. Cutlibert's College held a tennis afternoon at the college on Tuesday. Misses Gwcn Hooper and Ena Potter arranged the games, and after very even play the following girls tied:—Misses Lovvric McGregor, Billie Jessup and Zena Bishop. They then played off, and the cup, a gift of the association, was won by Miss Billie Jessup. Amongst those present were: Misses L. Clouston (principal), I- Gray, Tory Johnson (president), Ena Potter, Val Roulston, Lowrie McGregor, Laura Blakey, Gwen Hooper, Joan Dods, Effie Hardley, Jean Mitchell, Gwen Mitchell, Helen Bews, Billie Jessup, Joan Potter, Flora Jenkins, Rita Hill, Zena Bishop, Carol Witherow, Edna Cox, Joyce Stacey, Ruby Wallace, Mary Davis, Kathleen Tcape, Ethe 1 . Potter, Ruth Todd, Marjorie Innes, Jean Thompson, Nancy Thompson, A. Morley, W. Tippetts, Dorothy Bearc. Many of the girls remained to enjoy the use of the swimming baths.

A successful gift sale organised by the Methodist Ladies' Guild was held in the Jubilee Hall, Paparoa, on Wednesday last. Stalls were in charge of Paparoa, Matakohe and Wairere ladies, and useful articles in variety were offered. A feature of tho sale was the tastefullyarranged stalls, and various ,competitions added to the variety of the evening. Supper was provided. The proceeds for the evening were over £30, and with subsequent returns and subscriptions the total returns will be nearly £40. The proceeds will be devoted to the circuit fund. Successful harvest thanksgiving services were held at Matakohe on, Sunday last, conducted in the afternoon by the Bible Class Band, and in the evening by the Rev. H. G. Brown.
