PETROL TAX.

A "DERATING" INCREASE: (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter., WELLINGTON, this day. An increase in the petrol tax to provide a sum sufficient to enable rural land to be derated to the extent of at least two-thirds was advocated by Mr. D. S. Reid (Ooalition Reform, Raglan) in the House yesterday. Mr. Reid claimed that the fairest basis for maintaining roads was the principle, that the users should pay. The farmers would be paying their fair share if his suggestion were adopted, since to the extent they used the roads for motor traffic they would pay petrol taxation.
