MOUNT EDEN'S PROBLEMS.
"TRUCE" IN THE COUNCIL.
ME. MULVIHILL'S SUGGESTION.
Satisfaction with the result of the poll in Mount Eden was expressed by Mr. J. J. Mulvihill, one of the leading opponents of amalgamation. "The Mayor of Mount Eden, having announced publicly, prior to the poll, his intention not to accept an adverse vote as an expression of no-confidence, ratepayers and residents are left in some doubt as to how the council will function in its present divided state," said Mr. Mulvihill. "So far as I am personally concerned, I am prepared to sign a truce for the balance of our term. "Notwithstanding all that has been said concerning the state of Mount Eden's finances, I am convinced that the position is only difficult, and by no means desperate. Yesterday's poll is a mandate to the council that 4/9 is the limit of rating the majority of ratepayers will accept, and we must cut our cloth to suit our measure. "In my opinion, the present impasse can be surmounted by intense reorganisation, principally by the recasting of the existing committees and the creating of special committees to deal with outstanding, even if only temporary, problems."
