BOGUS TELEPHONE CALL.
MAN AND YOUTH CHARGED
ONE PAILS TO APPEAR.
There being no appearance of Walter McCann, mechanic, at the Police Court this morning, Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., directed that a warrant be issued for his arrest. McCann and a youth were each charged on summons with making a false statement over the telephone, on February 15 intending that Cyril Lewis should act on it to his substantial detriment. Detective Sergeant Kelly said the youth was dragged into the matter by McCann. Answering the telephone on February 15, Mr. Lewis, who was connected with a large motor firm, was informed that a- taxi hail broken down and was asked to dispatch a motor car to Otahuhu. "He heard a penny drop at the other end of the 'phone and becoming suspicions, as he knew there were no slot 'phones at Otahuhu, he reported the matter," said Mr. Kelly. "He also discovered that the taxi mentioned was in the city. It is alleged that McCann got this boy to telephone Lewis as there had been trouble between the two of them ancl he wanted to 'get one back' on Lewis.
The magistrate dismissed the charge against the youth.
