MISSED THE PICNIC.
CHILDREN FROM ORPHANAGE.
MATRON OBJECTS TO RACECOURSE.
COMPLAINT TO PRESBYTERIANS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
DUNEDIN, this day.
Because the Otago Motor Club's annual picnic for orphans was held on the Wingatui racecourse, the matron of one Presbyterian orphanage refused to allow the children under her charge to attend the picnic. Eighteen children were debarred from attending the picnic while between 300 and 400 children from other orphanages, including Presbyterian institutions, were having a good time. The club i<3 indignant over the regrettable incident, and is bringing a complaint before the Presbyterian Social Service Association. An official of the association stated that the question of children attending the picnic was left to the matrons of the institutions, and the woman in charge of that particular orphanage probably felt that a racing environment would affect the children. Last year children from the same orphanage were debarred from attending the picnic, but the motor club was given no explanation then.
