POPULAR PICTURE WRITING PUZZLE.

HUNDREDS OF ENTRIES FOR CROC'S. COMPETITION.

A NEW PUZZLE FOR THIS WEEK,

Dear Boys and Girls, —

Exactly six hundred entries were received for the picture writing competition which was conducted in the Budget a fortnight ago. Needless to say, the Crocodile'was in ecstasies of delight at the accord given his competition, and at first he did not want to devour even the papers which were not in accordance with the competition rules, but changed his mind, however, and in the course of the week sorted out all the rule breakers and suppe<s upon them. The standard of the work was exceptionally high, the majority of the competitors interpreting the puzzle in the correct manner. It 'will be remembered that the picture of the copy book represented the word "writing," but a great many competitors took too much for granted'and put down the word "book." Those who have been keen followers of the Budget have observed that the Crocodile invariably signs himself as "The Crocodile," and so they did not fail to append his usual signature at the foot of the letter. Some, however, were less observant, with the result that they simply wrote the word "Crocodile" and so had a mistake marked against them. In all there were fifty-three entries which contained the entirely correct solution, and from these the prize winners were selected, the neatness of the contributions being taken into consideration. The result was that Jack Dale was awarded the first prize, Esmay Clark the second, Margaret Reid the third, and Rira Mackie the fourth. Four-point certificates of merit Tiave been awarded to all others who contributed entirely correct solutions. A puzzle entirely new to readers of the Young Folk's Budget has been arranged for this week- A number of objects have been drawn from an unusual angle and it is the task of competitors to name correctly ' the objects indicated. This competi- /Z&\ _^* tion is not difficult and should provide S*ft ■ much amusement for boys and girls. fLlr J \tr t Full particulars may be obtained from X^CT the announcement which appears elsewhere on this page. -i^^^
