THE CASH RIDERS

TRACK AND CLUB JOTTINGS

ROAD SEASON ARRANGEMENTS.

FIXTURES. « arcll g, One-niile Eundlcap, Khybor Pass Track, 0.45 p.m. March 16. —Half-mile mill Ono Mile au<l a Half Handicaps. March 23.—Okulliau Sports Carnival (North Auckland). March 2G.—-Tβ Kuiti Society's Carnival. March 28 (Easter Monday).—Otorohanga. Bay of Plenty and Te Aroha Sports Clubs' Carnivals. March 30. —Te Puke Sports Club Carnival.

With the Easter meetings close at hand and the opening of the road season not fat off, riders are now getting in all the riding they can to be in readiness. Strong proof of this was forthcoming last Wednesday evening at Kliyber Paws track, when a good field of 18 competed in the Auckland Cycle Club's two-mile handicap. Two heats and final were therefore necessary on the six-lap to the mile track. The first heat starters were: W. JohnBon 390 yds; A. Mackrell. 360 yds: A. Rose, 290 yd- L. Pinfold, C. Galbraith. 225 yds; J. Cooney, 190 yds; G. Hall, 170 yds; S. Hayes, 95yds; W. Pratney, scr. tlohuson rode Well to hold the lead until two laps to go, when Cooney, Pinfold and Galbraith ranged up with him, and the quartet then had the finish to themselves. Pinfold was half a length in front of Cooney, with Johnson and Galbraith lengths away. Hayes punctured when doing well. Heat two starters were: T. Davis, SOOvds; O. Porter, 360 yds; R. Watson, 290 yds; M. Hibburt, 225 yds; W. Archer, K. Rae, 210 yds; S. Kara, IDOyds; E. Cleaver, 110 yds; S. Litchfield, 50yds. Porter led from start to finish and won easily, the middle-markers, Hibburt, Rae and Archer, filling the other positions halflengths between. The final was a good race, but would have been more interesting if Porter had not fallen just as lap two had been completed. Johnson pulled out to let hiiu through to take a lap, but Porter touched his wheel. Johnson was then set a_ hard task in trying to keep the others off, and they overtook him three laps from home, Cooney going out with a great burst to bridge the gap. This rider carried the field along at a slashing pace the rest of the race, and holding his lead went over one length and a lvalf ahead of Hibburt. Pinfold was a length away, and Rae half a length. Ex-Taranaki Rider Impresses. J. Cooney (190 yds) impressed the writer very much with his display the previous week when he finished second to Pratney, and lie further enhanced his reputation on this occasion by his splendid exhibition of neat fast pedalling. It looks Hβ if the club have secured a, rider above the ordinary, and his future efforts will be followed with interest. At no stage of the final did he seem to exert himself, and when he went out and bridged the gap to Johnson'it was without apparent eftort, to finally finish with plenty in reserve. He will be competing at Waharoa, and is nicely handicapped to again show his prowess. , ■ . . , Murray Hibburt (225 yds), for hie inches, is proving (himself One of the ibest pedallers in the club, and for consistent riding has -no equal on the track this season. His ■vfhole heart is in the sport and he deserves to be a success. Experience and tuition has wrought a big improvement in tnie rider and, though he waa no match for Oooney over the final stages, the way ue tickled him was good to watch. Lon Pinfold (225 yds), who was a big Success on the ibanked track last season, hoe not competed much this, .but ra now back in "harness" and showed some of his old form in Retting third. It should not take much improvement to see Lon figuring on the winning list again. Ken Rae (210 yds) rode splendidly at the opening of the season, but then seemed to lose form. Judging by 'his effort it looks as if lie is getting bade to it again. W. Johnson and Ossie Porter both rode Well, but unluckily, and next week should take a power of beating in the anile. - Annual Meeting. The Auckland Cycle Club's annual meetIng was held in the Chamber of Commerce last Tuesday evening, thei'e being a good representation of .members. Mr. J. L. Harris, the (president, occupied the chair. He thanked the officials, members and ladies for their hard work in making the year a successful one, and trusted the coming one would be just as successful. After the report and balance-sheet had been adopted much business pertaining to the sport on road and .trade for the coming £ear was discussed at length. Secretary H. W. Tonkin and Handicapper G. L. Knight were granted honorariums for their services during the year.

The opening of the road season was fixed for April 9, the track season to close March 30. The big classic road race was arranged for October 15, a week aihead of the big Taranaki event, and .to be from Tβ Aroha to Papakura instead of Cambridge to Auckland. Mr. F. C. Flanagan intimated that he would donate the championship sash. Officers elected for the ensuing year were:—Patron, Mr. H. Edwards; vicepatron, Mr. A. C. Herring; president, Mr. 3. L. Harris;, vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Newdick, P. Kickman, A. H. Hihburt, W. H. Worrall, F. C. Flanagan and F. T. McAneny; committee, Messrs. S. Hayes, S. Litchfield, F. Lcnvndes, C. A. Willcox, D. Storey, H. Clay and W. Archer; club captain, Mr. S. Hayes; vice-captain, Mr. 8, Litchfield; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. W. Tonkin; handicapper, Mr. G. L. Knight; auditor, Mr. P. Rickman. The Okaihau Club -have allotted £20 for (half, two and five mile handicaps on March 23. This club is situated in North Auckland. The Te Puke Club, on March 30, have allotted £26 for half, one and two mile handicaps. Entries close for both; meetings on March 19. Last Friday evening the Whakatane Cycle Club held two events at the Domain. Cyril Sunkel, who is riding very consistently of late, won the two miler off 250 yds from Stan Doncaster (250 yds), who Iβ. also showing consistent form. Fred Roberta (350 yds) was third. Ten started. The half mile event went to Bill Brennan (120yda), who is showing better form and deserved his win. Albert Lander (75yds) was second, and Keith Pyne (120 yds) who rode well for his second ride, third. The two-miler was an exciting finish.
