DEMONSTRATION DAY.

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING. The School of Engineering of the Auckland University College is holding a demonstration day next Friday from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6.30 to 9 p.m., for the purpose of allowing the public, who are invited to attend, to see the laboratories and workshops of the school under ordinary working conditions. In the strength of materials laboratory 30ft hardwood poles and blocks of concrete will be tested to destruction. Visitors will be able to see an experimental Pelton wheel working in the hydraulics laboratory. It is supplied with water at a pressure head by means of a 10 horse-power electric pump, and the consumption of water is measured by a Venturi meter. The Pelton wheel has glass sides so that the action of the jet of water on the vanes can be observed. The laboratory also contains tanks with weirs for measuring water supply, and a series of pipes supplied with water under pressure, so that measurements may be made of frictional resistance in them.

The heat engine laboratory will have a modern motor car engine working, and having its horse-power determined by a Froude hydraulic dynamometer, the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Apparatus will be exhibited to show the method of obtaining the calorific power of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels, and also apparatus for calibrating pressure gauges. The other engines will be working under under test conditions.

The electrical laboratory will be open to visitors, who can see the various motors and alternators working, and a demonstration will be given of the use of the stroboscope.
