OBITUARY.
MR. G. E. SMITH. Mr. George Edmund Smith, who died at his home at 20, Spring Street, Onehunga, was for many years a wellknown marine engineer.
Mr. Smith came to New Zealand as a child with liis parents in 1859 by the sliip Creswell. They landed at Lyttel- [ ton, and for many years the family lived at Papanui, Christchurch. Mr. Smith , served part of his time with the old Auckland engineering firm of Eraser and Tinne, and later lie was in several of the Unioii Steam Ship Company vessels. He was iii the island trade in the steamers Upolu and O valau. Later he was chief engineer on the mission vessel Southern Cross. When the Manukau waterworks scheme was launched Mr. Smith was engaged ashore, and for years he held the position of engineer at the waterworks. He was an ex-president of the Auckland branch of the Marine Engineers' Institute. Mr. Smith left a widow and six children—Mrs. Lance Pascoe and Miss Ruth Smith, of Onehunga, and Messrs. Arthur and Herbert Smith (Onehunga), Mr. Leonard Smith (Opiia), Mr. Harold Smith (Napier).
