SCENIC ROUTES.

OPENING NEW SITES.

A.A.A. EXPLORATIONS

NEW CAMPING-PLACES CHOSEN.

The touring staff of the Auckland Automobile Association has been inspecting a number of out-of-way roads leading through interesting country. Visits have been paid to numerous isolated beaches which will offer pleasant sites for motor camping during next summer. While there is a very great demand for the properly established motor camps near the centres of population, many motorists prtfer to include in their holiday tours the less frequented locations for camping. Access to a number of the places selected by the A.A.A. lies through private property, but arrangements are being made for motorists to be allowed camping privileges provided they leave the grounds clean 011 vacating camp.

Of particular interest in future will be the West Coast route running from tile Waingaro Hot Springs, and following more or less close th the coast right through to Awakino. Considerable improvement is being carried out to the roads, and although there are still long lengths of clay, these arc gradually being metalled. In fine weather, however, they do not present -any difficulty to the experienced driver. Bush, fern, river and sea provide a wealth of scenic attractions throughout these parts of the country.

Coromandel Peninsular is also proving very popular with motor campers, and the touring manager recently inspected the less frequented portions of the East Coast. These in time will undoubtedly be well patronised, but until tlicy are improved some of the roads provide extremely unpleasant travelling, and in the meantime it is likely that traffic will confine itself to the ordinary routes giving access to Coromandel and Mercury Bav.
