The garden party which was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nathan on Saturday, to aid the Newmarket Free Kindergarten, realised the fine sum of £110.
Mrs. Sinclair Ross, sister of Sir Henry Buekleton, was one of the guests at the ball given at Australia House to celebrate Australia Day, writes our London correspondent.
Mrs. J. A. Flcsher, president of the Canterbury Women's Club, who has been visiting Auckland, left to-day for Whangarei, where a conference of federated women's clubs is to be held.
Miss Mabel A. Nelson, Dip. Mus., the first person to be awarded the Music Scholarship of £180 from the University of West Australia, has been appointed pianist in the new Australian Broadcasting Company.
Mrs. B. 0. Porteous and her daughter Bernice, who have been staying with Mrs. Porteous' mother, Mrs. C. C. Warner, Christchurch, have left for their homo in Auckland. Mrs. Porteous was accompanied by Mrs. Warner, who will spend several weeks' holiday in Auckland.
Many people who met Mrs. C. A. Fraer, when in Auckland at the National Council conferences, will be sorry to hear of the death of her husband, the Rev. C. A. Fraer, last Wednesday. Mrs. Fraer, besides being a well-known social worker, is a member of the Christchurch City Council. She has two daughters, Mrs. E. M. Gibson, of Lees Valley, Dunedin, and Miss Rima Fraer, also of Dunedin.
Mrs. Hugh Bailey celebrated Dominion Day by an At Home in London, and she entertained friends not only from her native Auckland 1 , but from other parts of the Dominion. Mrs. and Miss Huia Rowlands, Mrs. Crisp and Miss Anne Clarkson were among the Aucklanders present; Dr. and Mrs. Clark, late of Christchurch; Mrs. Wensley Clarkson, of Christchurch; Mrs. MeNaughton Christie and her sister, Miss' Bailey, and Miss Gwen Pearson, all of Wellington; Mrs. Lindon Levien, formerly of Nelson; and Miss Stella Murray were amongst the others.
Misses Joan and Betty Rayner, two Auckland girls, who have had a great deal of success in Australia and also in other towns of New Zealand, where their season had to be extended, Auckland having only a short season, from lack of appreciation, leave their home town to-day for Vancouver by the Aorangi. They will remain for an indefinite period in Canada and then proceed to England and the Continent, where they will collect more folk lore suitable to their troubadour style of acting. They hope to revisit New Zealand again in a few years' time.- •
