DIED AT SEA.

PASSENGER ON AORANGI. LOS ANGELES BUSINESS MAN. When the Aorangi was at anchor in the stream this morning her ensign was at half-mast, signifying a death on board.

Mr. John F. Atkinson, aged 73, a first class passenger, died suddenly at 8.30 on Sunday morning. He was born in the United States, and was a wellknown building contractor in Los Angeles, as well as a member of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Atkinson was a passenger to New Zealand and Australia on the Matson liner Mariposa when she visited Auckland on February 20 on her Pacific cruise. He left the Mariposa in Sydney, and was returning to Vancouver by the Aorangi, en route to his home.

At about 3.30 a.rn. on Sunday the ship's surgeon, Dr. Costello Shaw, was called to Mr. Atkinson's cabin. He was suffering from acute indigestion, but after medical attention he appeared to be easier. About 8 o'clock Mr. Atkinson was seen by a steward going to have his bath. He appeared far from well, and was assisted back to his cabin and helped into a chair. Dr. Shaw was called immediately, but before he could reach the cabin Mr. Atkinson had collapsed and died from heart failure. H ; s body was brought on to Auckland, and a cable has been received asking that it be taken to Amcrica.
