STATE'S FINANCIAL POSITION.
Continuing its opposition to the amalgamation proposals, the Mount Eden Ratepayers and Householders' Association held a meeting in tho Centenary Hall, Dominion Road, last evening. Mr. R. J. Mills presided over an attendance of upwards of 150. A resolution opposing amalgamation was carried mously.Mr. R. Duggan dealt with comparative figures in seeking to show Mount Eden is in a favourable position regarding per capita deht, average rating value and indebtedness per ratepayer. Mr. W. J. Hammill traversed the position regarding roading, drainage and valuation. He said ratepayers knew now where they stood regarding valuations, but_ in amalgamation with the city readjustments might throw a totally different aspect on this question. In urging the electors to reject amalgamation, Mr. J. J. Mulvihill stressed the importance of the financial proposals now under consideration by the Government. Briefly, the increased exchange rate would hit the City-Council to the extent of £27,000 annually, while the economists' suggested lowering of the interest rate by 20 per cent would save the Mount Eden ratepayers £8700 annually, equivalent to a' decrease of 6jd in the pound. He referred to the Water Board Commission's finding that the charge made by the City Council of 1/ per 1000 gallons could stand a reduction. Immediately tho agitation was lulled the City Council raised the charge to 1/3 per 1000 gallons, which, he said, was an unfair impost that, should be removed as speedily as possible by the revival of the deferred Auckland Water BilL
