SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Mothers' Club held their usual weekly meeting on Tuesday. Mrs. Mann presided. The speaker for the afternoon was Mr. Alwright, of tho Grange Eoad Baptist Church, who gave an inspiring talk on "Joy." The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. * • • • Miss Daisy Deacon, of Naumai (North Wairoa), was the guest of honour at a. kitchen evening held in the Naumai Hall in honour of her approaching marriage. A presentation of the numerous gifts was made by Mr. J. Mitchell, who, on behalf of Mise Deacon's many friends, wished her happiness. Mr. H. Kerr responded on Mise Deacon's behalf. r * * * *

A meeting of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Auxiliary was held in the Eaupo Hall (North Wairoa), when the chair was taken by Mrs. E. Dunn and a reading was given by Mrs. G. A. Alexander. A humorous reading was given by Mrs. G. Thurston. An enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with afternoon tea, the hostesses being Mesdames G. Thurston and A. F. Wallace.

Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Snowden, of Hoanga, Dargaville, held a birthday party in honour of their daughter Mabs. The billiard room had been gaily decorated in multi coloured streamers and balloons, and dancing and games passed the time. A delectable supper was served. Among the invited guests were: Misses L. Smith, M. Crawford, P. McCall, P. McFarlane, J. and B. Putt, J. Bagnall, M. Todd, E. McLean, S. and T. Langton, M. and E- Snowden, E. Evison. * * . • ♦

Mrs. W. Shilton presided over the regular monthly meeting of the Kerepeehi Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union on Wednesday in the Kerepeehi Hall. There was a fair attendance of members. Mrs. W. E. Chick was welcomed as a new member. The secretary advised the meeting that circulars had been received from headquarters' whereby the members could participate in a 10 per cent discount on certain goods purchased by the division through the union. The secretary reported that the result of the card evening was very gratifying. Mr. Mclnnes, president of the Kerepeehi branch of the union, requested the ladies to assist in gathering produce for the relief of the unemployed. Those present at the meeting stated their willingness to contribute produce to such a worthy purpose and to forward it to the Auckland central depot. On this occasion all the officers received their badges.

Thero was a good attendance of members at the meeting of the Euawai (North Wairoa) branch of the women's division of the Farmers' Union. The chair was occupied by Mrs. W. A. Preston (president).

A successful At Home was held on tho Mount Wellington croquet lawns on Thursday, when the tables were tastefully decorated with asters and belladonna lilies. Mrs. Hay, president, thanked all for their attendance and hoped they had all spent a pleasant day. Progreesivo croquet was played, the winners in tho first session being Mrs. Gollan A, Mrs. Nixon B. Mrs. Gatwood, consolation; second session, Mrs. Aicken A, Mrs. Unsworth B, Mrs. McKclvie, consolation. Competitions were won by Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Beacon.

Tho Mothers' Thought Guild held their usual monthly meeting on Tuesday, at tho residence of the president, Mrs. Hcraus, "Sunhaven," Bclevedere Eoad, Epsom. Mrs. Macfarlane read an interesting paper on "Psycho-Therapeutics." Tracing the various methods of healing disease from the earliest agee to the present day, tho speaker showed that it had been proved that, always, thero was a something in tho patients' themselves that effected a cure, rather than the actual remedy itself. Just as now we recognise tho subconscious mind as the great factor in cases of healing. Afternoon tea and social chat brought to a close a most instructive afternoon.

The Waimauku branch of the League of Mothers held tho first meeting of tho year in the local hall on Wednesday. There was a good attendance. The election of officers took place. President, Mrs. T. Charter; secretary, Mrs. A. Burrell, magazine secretary, Mrs. J. Adkins; correspondence secretary, Mrs. P. Bell; cradle roll secretary, Mrs. J. L. Fray; committee, Mesdames J. B. Copeland, S. Walker, C. Jackson, Theo KerrTaylor, H. Cane, W. Hollinger, I. Levett, J. Martin, and L. Wightman. It was decided to alter the day of meeting from the first Wednesday to the second Wednesday in each month. During the afternoon a programme was drawn up for the year. It was decided that committee members each take it in turn to be responsible for arranging for hostesses for one afternoon. The hostesses for tho afternoon were Mesdames Theo Kerr-Taylor and H. Cane.

To celebrate the coming of age of her young daughter Edna, Mrs. Eaymond Jones, of Kihikihi Eoad, Te Awamutu, gave a dance, at which there was a very largo attendance of friends. Mrs. Jones wore a black and cherry figured crepe dress, and Mise Jones wore ivory embroidered georgette and silk net. Among those present were: Mesdames C. E. Lockyer, E. Haliburton, G. Teasdale, A. J. Shepherd, Corboy, L. Young (Elstow), K. N. Hiskcns, J. Muir, H. Wing, L. Coombes, and the Misses Martyn, Edna. House, E. Avis Eickit, Nellie Eeese, Hope Civil, Monnie Ellis (Otorohanga), Phyllis North, Pat English, Mary Mandeno, Hilda Garvey, Eleanor Peake, Margaret Wynyard, Gipsey Garvey, Ethel Davis, Dot Peake, Mona Kay, Joyco Davis, Dorothy Cucksey (Auckland), E. Hall, Muriel Chamberlain, B. Dust, Vera Holt, Margaret Storey, N. Higgins, and E. Thompson (Papakura).

Mrs G. W. Forbes, wife of the Prime Minister, is very fortunate in the wonderful weather which always favours her "At Homes." Last week she entertained many of her friends in the Parliament House reception room. The flag-draped windows were thrown wide open to let in the cool air and sunshine. Large bowls of giant dahlias in shades of flame, gold and rose pink, presented to Mrs. Forbes by a well-known gardener, of Lower Hutt, presented a wonderful eight, and on the table were slender vases of scarlet gerbera and graceful maidenhair fern. Mrs. Forbes, assisted by her two daughters, the Misses Bertha and Jessie Forbes, received the guests. Mrs. Forbes was wearing a handsome frock of black lace with a short square-cut coat and one of the new "pancake" felt hats. She wore a shoulder spray of scarlet roses. Miss Bertha Forbes was in a blue frock of patterned crepe de chine, touched with beige and green, with a beige hat. Miss J. Forbes wore a pale blue and pink patterned crepe de chine frock, and blue straw hat. Among the invited guests were:— Lady Bell, Miss E. Bell, Mrs. A. C. Day, Lady Findlay, Lady Statham, Lady Buekleton, Lady Pomare, Mrs. Coates, Miss Downie Stewart, Mrs. Endean, Mrs. Triggs, Mrs. Jull (Waipawa), Mrs. Rhodes (Thames), Miss Rhodes, Lady Myers, Mrs. Macarthy Reid, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Mrs. Frank Hay, Mrs. Frank Dyer, and Misa Dyer, Mrs. T. E. Y. Seddon.
