WOOL ABLAZE.
ON RAILWAY CROSSING.
CAPSIZED LORRY AFIRE
TRAIN AND CARS DELAYED
DRIVER ESCAPES INJURY
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day
Excitement was caused at Waikanac shortly before eight o'clock on Saturday evening by a lorry heavily laden with wool capsizing when crossing the railway lino just south of the township, and immediately bursting into flames.
The bales of wool were spilled right across the tracks, and they also caught fire, and the blaze lit up the countryside for some miles. So fierce was the lire that the woodwork of the cattle stop caught alight, and held up a north-bound local train, which in consequence arrived in Palmcraton North about 70 minutes late.
A long queue of motor cars from both directions had to wait until the lire had subsided. The lorry was owned by the Highway Transport Company and was bringing a big load of wool from Shannon to Wellington.
Despite the rain, some of the bales were still smouldering yesterday afternoon. The driver of the lorry was not seriously injured.
