Twenty married Auckland men have been engaged by the Ohinemuri County Council for drainage work under the variation of Scheme 5 which was anouneed by the Labour Department this eek The men will leave for Paeroa pn Wednesday. The job will last at ] ea ct three months. The scheme provides for those men known as "four-day" men, who, since the introduction of the rationing system worked three days a week at 12/0 ! dav and have stood down in the fourth \>ek These men will now work for five r! 'a week for eight hours a day at the rate of £2 10/ a week "Three-day" ien , who have been working for 174 hours at £1 7/6 a week, will work for m ,7/(5 a week. With this arrangement, fhA stand-down week will be abolished, Ind instead of earning £5 12/6 a month "four-day" men will have the chance of Pflrnin" £10 a month and "three-day" men £7 10/ instead of £4 2/0. This will be the first batch of men to work under the new system. The Ohinemuri County Council has engaged the men for drainage work a few miles from Paeroa, in the direction of the Cadinan Road. Those selected are Auckland married men. The job will take at least three months to complete, in d it is likely that further work will be carried out. The first part of the work will be on a main sewer one mile lofltr. other works are being considered by "the Ohinemuri County Council, and there is a possibility that more men will be taken on. The Railways Department, at the instigation of the Ohinemuri County Council, has granted a reduction of fares to the men. It has been suggested that since toe work on which the men will be engaged will occupy a considerable time, some inducement should be offered by the council in the way of transport to aiiow the men to visit their homes at stated intervals. This matter will be left entirely in the hands of the Ohinemuri County Council.
