"Plus four" has nothing to do with bogey or golf. The term' was first used in an Army order dealing with a similar pair of knickerbockers; thus, "Length is to knee plus four inches." The garments thus came to be called "plus fours." Thomas Saint, an Englishman, invented the sewing machine as far back as 1790. It was, however, improved by Elias Howe, .who patented his machine in 1846, and is generally regarded as 'the inventor of the sewing machine.
